This day in Railroad History
March 9, 1850
The Carroll County Rail Road was organized. This ten mile horse-car line was the earliest predecessor of the Nickel Plate Railroad and eventually grew into a five hundred mile railroad that formed a cross in northern Ohio. From the original Carroll County, the line extended west to Canton by 1880, and north to reach Cleveland in 1881. It later reached Zanesville as a standard gauge railroad, now called the Cleveland, Canton & Southern Railroad. The CC&S became part of the Wheeling & Lake Erie on August 5, 1899. In 1949, the Nickel Plate leased the long sought Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, which it had controlled for a number of years. The Wheeling gave the Nickel Plate a financially stable railroad that was a consistent money maker. With the addition of the W&LE, the stage was set for Nickel Plate's spectacular operational and financial performance of the 1950's.

Burlington Northern 2349 prepares to leave Shelton, Washington with a load of Simpson lumber in the late afternoon on a cloudy July 1994 afternoon. BN 2349 and 2290 are both former SLSF GP38-2's while the middle unit 1742 is a former Northern Pacific GP9 304. This was one of the few times I ever caught any BN action in Shelton prior to moving back to the Northwest. We moved back to the Northwest about a year after the Puget Sound and Pacific purchased the former NP line and I was able to catch a lot of their trains in Shelton, as well as their other lines.
