This day in Railroad History
March 13, 1959
A crewless, runaway 15-car train struck the Union Pacific Depot in downtown Olympia, Washington with such force that it went through the building and crossed 4th Avenue, destroying half a city block. One man was killed and 20 persons required hospitalization. Property damage exceeded $250,000. The UP train had stopped at a switch point on the northern fringes of Tumwater, about two miles south of downtown Olympia. The crew uncoupled a section of the train from the locomotive, but in doing so, failed to set hand brakes and did not properly apply air brakes on the 15 cars that had been uncoupled. The train had been parked on a slight downhill grade, and soon began coasting north toward Olympia. Twelve of the 15 train cars were loaded with plywood and plasterboard, and the total weight of the train was estimated at 900 tons. The train thundered through a bumper at the depot and burst through a brick wall into the depot, instantly killing Kenneth Dilley, telegraph operator.

Burlington Northern SD40-2 7143 leads 4 BN SD40-2's out of the Cascade Tunnel at Scenic, Washington in July of 1994. The BN green blends well with the fir trees on the west side of Stevens Pass. I sure liked those SD40-2's. With the BNSF merger most of the SD40-2's are gone and replaced by newer GE power, who would have thought I would be moaning the blues over the loss of the BN.............. Especially growing up in Idaho and being a Milwaukee Road fan..
