Trainnews - volume 3 - issue 57 - 03/16/10

Notice - Thanks to David Curlee for hosting Trainnews on this forum. Trainnews will continue to publish until David updates the status of the forum or until David closes the business which I assume means the end of the discussion board.

In the mean time I am looking at options should this site close down, I am thinking of moving Trainnews to its own web site which could contain a board similar to this one if David should chose to close the Altamont Press web site.

I will be traveling home tomorrow from spring training baseball overload and will publish the next Trainnews on Thursday evening. I will process any photos that I have in queue on Thursday and Friday. Thanks for your continued support.

This day in Railroad History
March 15, 1980
The last Milwakee Road train left Tacoma, Washington on the run east. The Milwakee was bankrupt for the 3rd and final time, and abandoned or sold everything west of Miles City MT. Never able to compete with the Hill lines for traffic or interchange, the 1970 Burlington Northern merger was supposed to guarantee the viability of the Milwaukee Road---never before had a railroad merger’s approval hinged on ensuring the competition’s survival. Twelve new gateways were opened, but traffic never materialized in sufficient volume to do so, because, some argue, BN undermined the very agreements that allowed its merger to take place. The Milwaukee begged inclusion in the BN to the ICC in 1975, a request denied two years later; nine months after that, the Milwaukee Road declared its final bankruptcy.

March 16, 1987
The last revenue train crossed the Canadian Pacific Railway's bridge at Outlook, Saskatchewan. The viaduct, with 9 piers over a span of 3000 feet and rising over 150 feet above the South Saskatchewan River, is one of the highest in the Canadian prairie provinces. At the time of construction, these were the highest concrete piers in the world, each pier required more than 20,000 bags of Portland cement. The bridge structure sitting atop the 9 piers was originally across the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, constructed in 1885. This portion of the bridge was taken apart, moved and re-assembled at Outlook in 1911. After the bridge and tracks were abandoned by CP, the Town of Outlook initiated a project to turn the bridge into a pedestrian "SkyTrail" with connections to the Trans Canada Trail.
