This day in Railroad History
March 18, 1855
The first train operated on the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, the world's first working railway suspension bridge. It spanned 825 feet and stood 2.5 miles downstream of Niagara Falls. Connecting Niagara Falls, Ontario to Niagara Falls, New York, the bridge carried trains over the river by way of the bridge's upper deck while pedestrians and carriages used the lower. Three railway lines crossed over the bridge. The Great Western Railway, New York Central Railroad, and New York and Erie Rail Road differed in the width of their tracks; the bridge used a triple gauge system to conserve space, overlapping two tracks on top of each other and using a rail of each to form the third track. With increasingly heavier trains, in 1897 the Suspension Bridge was finally replaced by the Steel Arch Bridge, which was later renamed the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. When the Suspension Bridge was dismantled, its wire cables were found not to have noticeably degraded, a testament to its strength and design.

This is a scan I took several years ago. I had wondered what had happened to this stain glass herald of the Southern Pacific. As a kid I used to take the ferry from the old Oakland mole to San Francisco as my dad had passes, as an SP employee. Each time we went through the gates you could look overhead and see the outside lights of the sun penetrating the wonderful spectrum of colors in the glass lighting the darkened shed of the mole. Then the mole, located at the foot of 7th Street in Oakland, CA was torn down and for years I wondered what had happened to this magnificent SP herald. On a trip to the State Railroad Museum in Sacramento I was looking at the SP cab forward on display, turned around and……THERE IT WAS!! I know this is not a scan of a locomotive or consist of cars, but hopefully it might bring back a few fond memories in others as it did to me when I finally found it again.
