This day in Railroad History
March 23, 1914
The Pennsylvania Railroad opened its new station on Baker Street, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. it was an event which culminated 55 years of rail travel in Fort Wayne and ushered in a new era of rail service. The new $550,000 station was the gateway to the city for thousands, and as such had a strong impact on commerce and architecture. The PRR Car Shops, open since 1837, employed more than 1,000 men at one time, making it one of the City's major employers well into the twentieth century. Pennsylvania Station was visited by 10,000 people on opening day and was announced as being the largest and grandest of the City's four stations. William L. Price, an architect with Price and McLanahan in Philadelphia, designed the Baker Street Station as well as all Pennsy Stations between Pittsburgh and Chicago. The Station attests to Price's national recognition as a premier Arts and Crafts style architect.

Norfolk Southern train 11R heads south on the H Line at Success, Virginia on February 4, 2010. This passing siding is on NS's Hagerstown District on the Virginia Division, on the former Norfolk & Western main between Hagerstown, MD and Roanoke, VA. Train 11R originated at Binghamton, NY and is en route to Linwood, NC. This line underwent a major upgrading with the increased traffic after the Conrail merger, with the installation of several new sidings and replacement of the antiquated signaling system. At Riverton Junction near Front Royal, VA this train will diverge onto the former Southern Railway's Manassas Gap Branch, now known at the NS B Line, and head east to Manassas, VA.
