This day in Railroad History
March 24, 1986
The last revenue train operated over the Eagle Mountain Railroad. The EMRR is a private railroad in California, owned by the Kaiser Steel Corporation, now, Kaiser Ventures, Inc. The EMRR is 51 miles long and is located in Riverside County. Constructed in 1947-1948, it was used until 1986 to haul iron-ore from Kaiser's Eagle Mountain Mine to an interchange with the Southern Pacific Railroad. SP hauled the ore to the Kaiser steel mill in Fontana, California, which provided steel for Kaiser's west coast shipyards. In August 2000, Kaiser Ventures reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Sanitation Districts, to purchase the landfill project to replace the Puente Hills Landfill, nearing the end of its useful life. However, since the agreement states that all lawsuits and claims regarding the project must be completed, the transaction has yet to occur.

A west bound Norfolk Southern coal train with "class unit" SD80MAC No. 7200 on lead passes through Cassandra, PA on February 8, 2010. This location is on NS's Pittsburgh Line west of Cresson, PA. Only 30 SD80MACs were constructed by EMD; all 30 of them were purchased by Conrail in 1996. After the Conrail split, 17 SD80MACS went to NS, the other 13 to CSX.
