HAPPY EASTER

This day in Railroad History
April 3, 2005
About 9:35 a.m., westbound Amtrak train No. 27, consisting of a single locomotive unit and four cars, derailed at MP 58.56 on the BNSF Railway Company’s Northwest Division. The train was traveling 60 mph on single main line track when it derailed as it was traveling through a curve in a cut section of the Columbia River Gorge on the north side of the river near Home Valley, Washington. Post accident investigation found there were 19 consecutive concrete ties that exhibited rail seat abrasion, which ranged in depth from 1/16 inch to 1 1/4 inches into the concrete surface on the outside curve rail. The voids between the bottom of the rail and the top of the concrete crossties allowed the rail to deflect downward and rotate outward under load. During the 12 days prior to the accident, four separate “rough riding” reports were made regarding the area where the train later derailed. The first report was not followed by an inspection, but followup inspections were conducted in response to the subsequent three reports. Only one of the 3 followups was conducted by the BNSF track inspector regularly assigned to the area where the accident occurred. The other two inspections were conducted by a substitute inspector normally assigned to an adjacent track territory.

The St. Louis Car Company was founded at St. Louis, Missouri for the explicit purpose of building streetcars. In 1889 the 400 car manufacturing capacity was exceeded. At the turn of the century, there had been four competing streetcar builders in the city of St. Louis: the American Car Company, the Brownell Car Company, the Laclede Car Company, and the St. Louis Car Company. Brownell had been taken over by American in 1900. American in turn had been acquired by the J.G. Brill Company in 1902. And Laclede was acquired by St. Louis Car in 1903, ostensibly as a means of giving St. Louis improved capacity.
