HAPPY EASTER

This day in Railroad History
April 5, 1903
After a year of surveys and planning, construction of the Great Northern Railway Tunnel under the Seattle, Washington business district began yesterday. An army of 350 workers with pickaxes, shovels, and wheelbarrows began digging into the hillside at a point between Western Avenue and, what was then, Elliott Avenue and between Stewart and Virginia streets, the northern portal. Shortly thereafter, crews also started digging into the hillside at 4th Avenue and Washington Street, the southern portal. The GN built it in 1904, at the insistence of Seattle City Engineer Reginald H. Thomson, to help alleviate rail congestion on Railroad Avenue (now Alaskan Way) and it is still in use today. In its heyday, the GN Tunnel was the largest, although not the longest, tunnel in the nation. It cost $1,500,000 to build and was intended for use by both the GN and the Northern Pacific Railroads, which split construction costs.

In January of 1995 it was rare to see 3 GP30's with a GP7 as mainline power, even on a low priority freight. Just west of Mountainair NM on a cold snowy day I caught GP30 ATSF 2718, GP7u 2098 and GP30's 2726 and 2771 on this eastbound... Love those yellow bonnets...
