This day in Railroad History
April 6, 1896
The 800mm gauge Snowdon Mountain Railway in North Wales, UK, opened. It is the only rack railway in Great Britain. All of the steam locos were built by Schweizerische Lokomotiv und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) in Winterthur, Switzerland between 1895-1923. The SMR was built using the Abt rack system. This consists of two parallel bars of steel between the running rails with the teeth in each bar staggered so that a gap in one bar corresponds to a tooth in the other. Locomotives have driven rack pinions and push the single passenger carriage up the mountain. On the downward trip, the locomotive is simply used to brake the train, and there is no true coupling between locomotive and carriage, just a central buffer. If the locomotive should try to descend too fast, a speed-governing brake on the carriage is automatically applied.

A few weeks ago I posted a scan of the stained glass SP logo that used to hang at the entrance to the SP ferry to San Francisco at the old Oakland mole at the foot of Seventh Street. This is a bit ironic!! I was down in San Antonio, TX last week and had a chance to visit the huge old SP depot there. There was the twin to this stained glass window, only instead of saying “Southern Pacific” around the rails and sunset, this one had “Sunset Route” around the outside, with the date the window was made (1902). I asked in the depot and was told that this is the original!! Just thought some might be interested in seeing this “twin” to the one that was at the mole in Oakland. The photo from outside shows the depot and the glass window in the center.
