This day in Railroad History
April 11, 1903
The Electric Railway Company ran its first car through Marshall, Michigan ran to Battle Creek. The line to extended from Battle Creek to Jackson, a distance of forty-seven miles. The system later extended from Kalamazoo to Detroit where it made connections with other lines. A local newspaper reported, "Saturday at about six o'clock occurred an event long prophesied and long anticipated by the citizens of this and neighboring towns. On that day the work and planning of many months was brought to completion and joy reigned supreme in the hearts of the Marshallites. In other words the first interurban car rolled majestically through the city to Battle Creek. The cars handsomely finished and equipped for the comfort of the passengers are spacious and commodious being thoroughly up to date in every way." Service was discontinued in December 1928.

One year to the day after the first shots had been fired on Fort Sumter, marking the start of the Civil War, Union spies under the command of James Andrews rode into Big Shanty, Georgia on the morning passenger train. Their motive was the destruction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Andrews, and his 19 raiders, slowly made their way towards the trains' locomotive, the General and uncoupled it along with three boxcars from the rest of the train. The raiders took their train north, burning bridges along the way, but were evetually caught, and most hanged. The Civil War was the first war in whch railroads played a major part, and the South's railroads suffered extreme damage by the end of the war.

An empty BNSF coal train passes the abandoned grain elevator between Collins and Dutton, Montana, on March 30, 2010. New coal traffic to Roberts Bank, B.C., has added two or more daily trains to BNSF's lightly-used secondary route through Great Falls.
