This day in Railroad History
April 15, 1864
The Central Pacific Railroad ran its first scheduled passenger train, using the locomotive #1 Governor Stanford. This locomotive had also been used on the CP's first excursion train and first revenue freight train. The locomotive also hauled materials for the construction of the CP over the Sierra Nevada. It was later downgraded from mainline service. From 1873 until its retirement in 1895, the locomotive served as a switcher and fire engine (outfitted with a water pump and hose to extinguish small fires along the track) in the Sacramento area. In 1899 it was presented to Jane Lathrop Stanford, widow of former California Governor Leland Stanford. She, in turn, donated the engine to Leland Stanford Junior University, where it was placed on display until 1963. Today it is on display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

Norfolk Southern local train P97 ducks under the former Southern Railway signal bridge at Winston Interlocking, three miles south of Culpeper, Virginia as it heads south on the former Southern Railway main on October 24, 2008. This train has just switched industries in Culpeper, and is heading to Charlottesville, VA. On the lead is C40-9W No. 9431, one of of 165 such diesels that NS purchased from General Electric in 2000.
