Trainnews - volume 3 - issue 100 - 05/06/10

Notice - Trainnews is posted at both trainnews.org and altamontpress.com. Checkout Trainnews.com a RR board dedicated to train and railroad news.

Editors Querry -This is issue 100 for 2010, we have had an interesting first part of the year. The internet news arena has changed with subscription services, and less reporters giving hard news stories. However, I have tried to find revelant material for the trainnews feature. Traditionally at issue 100 of the year, I ask for comments, input, etc and still welcome your input; however, this year I would also like some feed back on the trainnews.org site as over the last few days folks have had to read the news on that site due to some security issues with my work PC.

Any and all comments, suggestions, etc are welcomed. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

This day in Railroad History
May 6, 1851
The Orange & Alexandria Railroad prepared for its inaugural celebration tomorrow by running the engine 'Pioneer' ran from the north end of Union Street to the Wilkes Street tunnel in Alexandria, Virginia. The inaugural run extended from the western edge of downtown Alexandria to the waterfront, a total of under 2 miles. The O&A railroad reached Lynchburg in 1860 where it accessed the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. During the Civil War, the O&A was arguably the most fought over railroad in Virginia. The railroad provided the most direct all rail route from Washington to Richmond and the Orange & Alexandria would serve as a main highway for the Northern troops. The South vigorously defended the railroad against this invading force with the result that several major campaigns and dozens of battles and smaller engagements took place on or near the tracks of the O&A. The rail junction at Gordonsville would play a particularly prominent role in Robert E. Lee’s operations throughout the war. So important was this junction that it can probably be stated that nearly every soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia passed through it at one time or another.

The ex Milwaukee Road GP-9's of the St Maries River Railroad enter the main
yards of the railroad pulling a load of empties from a meet with the U.P. at
Plummer, Idaho on a warm July afternoon. To the right is the original
Milwaukee Road depot (1910). The St Maries River Railroad was created by
Potlatch Lumber (PFI) in 1980 when the western end of the MILW pulled out.
The St Maries was sold this year and its log hauling operations ended last
fall, with all but two of the 476 old Milwaukee Road log flats being
scrapped. I was able to get one of them donated, thanks to Potlatch, to the
WI&M Historic Preservation Group in their namesake town of Potlatch, Idaho,
where it now sits.

Editor's Note - I have found that the search engine is not finding JOC or Progressive Railroading on a regular basis, until it starts seeing these sites they will appear at the front of Domestic or International News as I will pull directly from those sites.
