This day in Railroad History
May 8, 1863
The Brotherhood of the Footboard was founded in Marshall, Michigan. A year later, its name was changed to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. In 2004, the BLE became the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), a division of the Rail Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. "The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, as the name implies, is at once a fraternal and a labor organization. It was fraternal in character because early meetings were held in secret for fear of reprisals from management. But its main purpose was and is to maintain the prestige of a highly skilled craft and to insure that its members are compensated accordingly."

The New York Central Railroad's Empire State Express, pulled by Engine 999, exceeded 100 miles per hour over a portion of its route from Syracuse to Buffalo, New York. This was the first time in history that humans had reached a speed of 100 mph. Word spread of this marvelous run and the next morning when the No. 999 back to Syracuse crowds turned out to see the "Queen of Speed". In the afternoon the No. 999 again headed westward towards Buffalo but this time railroad officials were on board to record the speed. Between Batavia and Corfu, Engineer Hogan opened the throttle all the way and the No. 999 responded with 112.5 miles per hour by the time it sped through the Village of Crittenden, in Erie County. The speed was recorded by train officials and newspaper reporters who clocked off mile posts using hand-held stop watches.

An east bound CSX coal train passes under a classic C&O signal bridge equipped with US&S type R-2 signals 150 yards east of the Surber Road crossing in White Sulphur Springs WV on September 30, 2007. Five classic US&S type R-2 signals from the C&O era still adorn the cantilever signal bridge, but may soon be replaced as part of the Great Allegheny Passage project to increase overhead clearances. This is on CSX's Huntington Division. A pair of EMD SD70MACs power this train on the head end, and a pair of GE AC4400CWs are shoving on the rear.
