This day in Railroad History
May 15, 1907
The narrow guage Tanana Valley Railroad near Fairbanks, Alaska, began construction began on the second phase of the TVRR, an extension of the trackage to Chatanika. The route was originally planned to go over Cleary Summit, but new mining activity in the Dome, Vault, Ridgetop and Olnes areas caused the railroad to be routed up the Fox Creek Valley to meet the needs of the new communities. On September 29, the construction crew reached Chatanika after building an additional 19.2 miles of railroad in four months, including over a mile of trestles and bridges! In 1917, the TVRR was sold at a bankruptcy sale for $200,000. The buyer resold the TVRR to the Alaska Engineering Commission (AEC) for $300,000 on December 31, 1917. The TVRR became the Chatanika Branch of the Alaska Engineering Commission Railroad, which became the Alaska Railroad in 1923.

The new Chicago Union Station opened. The Chicago Union Station Company was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Michigan Central Railroad, and Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The architect was Daniel Burnham of Chicago, who died before its completion. The firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White completed the work to Burnham's designs. Work began in 1913, but construction was delayed by World War I, labor shortages and strikes. Today, the monumental neoclassical station is the last remaining railroad terminal still used by intercity trains in Chicago. The station's ornate Beaux-Arts main waiting room, the "Great Hall", is one of the United States' great interior public spaces with its vaulted skylight, statuary, and connecting lobbies, staircases, and balconies. The Great Hall is over 110 feet high.

Running Extra

I went to the Santa Cruz Model Railroad Open House today. I met a good group of folks, and took some horrible pictures (I set up the camera icorrectly); however this is a layout worth visiting it is very interesting and fun to watch and operate trains. They are looking for members, and some folks that run G scale as the outdoor layout needs some TLC
