My guess is each crew member is given a daily allowance for meals and lodging. Two or more may CHOOSE to share a room in order to save money. They might also buy a large pizza at a grocery store and heat it in the motel room's microwave, instead of going to the nice Italian restaurant down the street - again to save money.

I don't really know, but that is my guess.
