This day in Railroad History
May 24, 1909
The Los Angeles & Mount Washington Incline Railway had its grand opening. John Marsh & Company placed advertisements in the Los Angeles Times inviting the general public to come see the new incline cable railway and to ride it to the summit of 940 ft Mt. Washington. People lined up at the end of the cable line all the way down Marmion Way, clear to Pasadena Avenue, in order to make the trip. A car packed with passengers left the terminal every 10 minutes throughout the day. An exclusive three story, mission-style hotel building was constructed. It would have a roof garden, spacious balconies and porches, and a beautiful Japanese garden out in the front. In 1918, in a dispute between the City of Los Angeles, the California Railroad Commission, and the Mt. Washington incline over who had jurisdiction, the California State Supreme Court ruled that the Los Angeles & Mt. Washington Railway was a vertical elevator - not a railroad. Shortly thereafter, the railroad was shut down.
