This day in Railroad History
June 5, 1883
The inaugural run of the Express d’Orient left Paris’s Gare de l’Est station. The train’s route took it to Germany, Austria and Bulgaria before arriving in Istanbul. In 1885, a second route was introduced, this time offering service via Vienna, Belgrade and Plovdiv. From there passengers could sail to Istanbul. The Orient Express made its first non-stop run from Paris to Istanbul on June 1, 1889. Istanbul remained the train’s eastern terminus until 1977. The following year, the train’s name was officially changed from Express d’Orient to the Orient Express. Operations were suspended during World War I. When the train began to run again, in 1918, the completion of the Simplon Tunnel a year later allowed for the introduction of a southern route, by way of Milan.

June 6, 1864
The San Francisco-San Jose Railroad, built by Peter Donahue, Timothy Dane, and Henry Newhall brought passenger rail service to the San Francisco Peninsula. The railroad was an instant success, since it reduced the cost of passage between San Francisco and San Jose from the stage fare of $32 to $2.50. Encouraged by their success, they formed the Southern Pacific Railroad in December 1865, for the purpose of building a new line to the Colorado River. Upon the completion of the CP-UP transcontinental line in 1869, the "Big Four" of the Central Pacific, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, and Collis P. Huntington, watched with some concern the successes of the upstart Southern Pacific. By 1868, the 3 SP entrepreneurs were not only running scheduled passenger service on the San Francisco-San Jose line, but had formed a third railroad, the Santa Clara and Pajaro Valley, to lay track to Gilroy. From there they had surveyed a route through Pacheco Pass, down the San Joaquin Valley and over the Tehachapis to join the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad at Needles. In 1870 the Central Pacific bought out the 3 smaller lines and merged them under one company, the Southern Pacific. The new Southern Pacific then announced plans to build a coast route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, opening the entire western coast for settlement.
