Mitch, I ususally like to simplfy things, so when I tried to figure out all the data that Charles posted, I felt a little goofy. I'm not sure what most any of that data means, and I've found that most new things are way more complicated than they need to be, so that was just a little humor!
I once used my wife's newer film camera at work to try out some shooting in difficult, rapidly changing conditions. In the end, all the features turned out to be a serious hindrance, and I wound up disabling all but the TTL meter. I try to keep shooting guidelines based on Shutter Speed, Aperature and Focus.
And I like that shot! Panning is a little tricky, what with trying to keep everything level, in focus and properly exposed. And I like to use a power winder when panning for the same reason as you stated: the first few shots lead up to the brain synchronizing with the action and getting the right frame exposed.
