It reads in part:

For decades, silent film classics such as John Ford's 'Upstream' have been considered lost to history, victims of the highly volatile nitrate stock once used in the production of movie reels. Now, however, the truth has been discovered: the movies weren't lost at all, they were just in New Zealand.

Yes, New Zealand, which in recent years has become something of a filmmaking Shangri-La thanks to high-profile flicks such as 'The Lord of the Rings,' is now contributing to the movie world in a new, unexpected way, as The Los Angeles Times is reporting the discovery of a large number of silent features previously thought to be lost forever. Among the movies resting comfortably in the New Zealand Film Archive: the 1927 epic 'Upstream,' Clara Bow's 'Maytime' and a promotional film from Southern Pacific Railroad that dates to 1898.

And thanks to a new initiative between the New Zealand Film Archive and The National Film Preservation Foundation here in America, those once lost movies will now be receiving a new home, as preservationists are currently in the process of restoring the movies for repatriation to the United States. Once the process has been completed, the movies, which will cost over a half million dollars to preserve and restore, will then be divided up among five domestic archives for public scholarship: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the George Eastman House, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art and the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
