Newcastle, Wyoming question

In May, I took a little 16 day cross country junket from Sacramento to Wisconson and back via Mt. Rushmore and got 'TRAINED' along the way. It was for family business in Wisconson, but I wanted to also scout out the rail areas I've been reading about these last thirty years. A taste of the Powder River basin, knowing now that in Bill, Wyoming one can stay at a decent motel(Oak Tree Inn, with Penny's Diner next door) in the middle of no where! And lunch in Newcastle, Wyoming. A nice double track main line kind of town, with a sweeping left turn, south to north. The digital died just as a big ole coal train came a calling..... and the question? Yes, getting to that. Ex BN of course, but who before? Has it always been a main? From where to where?
Thanks for any help, Peter
