This day in Railroad History
June 12, 1947
The narrow guage Sumpter Valley Railway operated its last train into Baker, Oregon, its connection with the Union Pacific. Shortly thereafter the all the rails were removed, with the exception of about a mile for switching the Oregon Lumber yard in Baker City. Built starting in 1890 by David Eccles, the railway's initial purpose was to haul logs to a sawmill in South Baker City. By 1891, the line had reached McEwen, 22 miles west of Baker City, and was offering passenger and freight service. To reach uncut forests further west, the company extended the line, reaching Sumpter in 1896 and continued southwestward to Whitney, Tipton, Austin and Bates. By 1910, it arrived in Prairie City, a ranching and mining community along the John Day River in Grant County. In 1976, a local group rebuilt one mile and today operates one of the SVR' original steam locomotives over 5 miles of track near Sumpter.

The U.S. Federal Surface Transportation Board issued a certificate of interim trail use, allowing New York City to remove most of the former New York Central Railroad elevated "High Line" from the national railway system. The High Line was built above street level n the early 1930s by the NYC to eliminate the fatal accidents that occurred along the street-level right-of-way and to offer direct warehouse-to-freight car service that reduced pilferage for the Bell Laboratories Building (now the Westbeth Artists Community) and the Nabisco plant (now Chelsea Market), which were served from protected sidings within the structures. It was in active use until 1980. Slated for demolition, public pressure resulted in part of the structure instead rehabilitated and turned into a public park. The link includes a mix of vintage and contemporary photos. The park is now open to the public, although this website has not yet been updated to reflect that.
