WOW !! I never realized how many separate corporate titles were inherited by Conrail on M - Day, April 1 , 1976. Of course many of these were only paper titles, having been swallowed up by the component RR's that formed CR.( Kinda like Central Pacific still existed as a component of Espee until the 1940's.)
Interesting aside #1 : Penn Central Company continued to exist until quite recently, as a real estate concern for properties not conveyed to CR.
Interesting aside #2 : Of all the component roads in CR, the Erie Lackawanna was the 2nd largest, the most colorful, and the only component RR other than PC to reach from the NYC area to Chicago. Yet the E - L had the most trackage abandoned & was little represented in the final CR system. E - L almost stayed out of CR, having courted ownership by Chessie System instead.
Interesting aside #3 : The Delaware & Hudson, which once considered merging with E - L & Boston & Maine, more than doubled its' size on Conrail M - Day, as a result of trackage rights granted by the USRA in the interest of providing competition to CR.
Interesting aside #4 : The Penn Central bankruptcy in 1970 was the nation's largest corporate failure at the time. It also predicated the failure of most other Northeastern RR's, ( those that were still "solvent " ). Since PC was the largest RR in the Northeast, & interchanged with every other RR, its' bankruptcy relieved it of having to pay for car interchange with the other RR's, who then lost a major source of revenue. A real House of Cards.
