This day in Railroad History
June 16, 1965
The Northwestern Pacific railroad was reopened for business after a huge flood Christmas Week 1964. 100 miles of rails were swept away by the waters of the Eel River. One third of the Northwestern Pacific would need to be rebuilt. The Island Mountain Bridge lost two trusses, a span girder and a pier. The Cain Rock Bridge was severely damaged and the South Fork Bridge lost two truss spans and a pier. Machines were taken off Morrison Knudsen projects from all over the west to be bought in to rebuild the railroad through the Eel River Canyon. Thirty miles of new access road had to be built to get the smaller machines in to do the job. The MK workers rebuilt the line in 177 days.

POVA 8310, a former IC GP10, leads a train of 12 carloads of newsprint from the Ponderay
Newsprint Co, just south of Usk, WA on the morning of April 19, 2010. This morning started
off cool and foggy but by 9 am it was a beautiful sunny day. Two carloads of finished lumber were picked up at the Stimson reload at Priest River, Idaho and 2 more cars of finished lumber at the Riley Creek Mill at Laclede, Idaho.
