From your friends at the Capitol Corridor:

Special Message about today's delays - June 28, 2010

To those passengers who were and are affected directly or indirectly by the delays this morning, June 28, 2010, we’d like to thank you for your patience and give you some background on what occurred.

Morning Delays

To begin the day, Train #524 struck an unoccupied vehicle near Hayward, creating a delay for those passengers while the train and tracks were inspected for potential damage (none found) and a police report was logged. The track inspection also delayed both Trains 523 and 525.

While this transpired, vandals stole signal wire from the signal system at the other end of the Capitol Corridor route in West Sacramento, creating additional delays to all trains operating from 9:30 am to 11:00am between Sacramento and Davis.

In addition, passengers on Trains 529 and 531 were delayed when Train 529’s locomotive experienced mechanical difficulties near Hercules. That trainset was then combined with Train 531 for the remainder of the trip to Emeryville. Motorcoach buses met this train in Emeryville to pick up passengers traveling through to Oakland Jack London and Oakland Coliseum.

Afternoon Delays

Unfortunately, after the damaged signal system in West Sacramento was repaired this morning with new signal wire, vandals struck again at the same location. The signal system in West Sacramento is again down and all trains traveling between Davis and Sacramento from 3pm until approximately 6pm can expect delays while trains are manually signaled through that area.

To help minimize such events in the future, a concerted effort is being initiated by Capitol Corridor, Amtrak and the Union Pacific to explore ways to increase security surveillance of the West Sacramento signal box where numerous vandalism events have occurred. A similar effort is being made in terms of locomotive reliability. All the California-owned locomotives are going through an engine overall program over the next two years in order to facilitate improved equipment reliability. This upgrade program will address the current delays sometimes associated with locomotives.

Thank you for your patronage and patience during your train ride today.
