This day in Railroad History
July 5, 1979
The Durham and Southern Railroad which had run through the center of Durham, North Carolina, since 1899, had its last run from Apex to Dunn. No longer was the railroad the cheapest way to transport goods to and from the industries of Angier and was no longer realizing a profit. Mayor Jack Marley and other town officials requested that railroad officials donate to the town the depot and the one hundred foot right of way within town limits. Construction began in 1898, with Mr. B. N. Duke and other capitalists of Durham providing funds. The complete line was finished from Durham to Dunn in the summer of 1903. Along the line, the towns of Angier (1901) and Coats (1905) were incorporated at this time. In 1906, the name was changed to the Durham and Southern Railway. The line operated independently until November 1981, when it was acquired by Seaboard Coast Line, later CSX.

The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, which was chartered in 1870, completed its narrow-guage line over La Veta Pass to Alamosa, Colorado. The line was originally envisioned as part of an ambitious and never-realized narrow gauge line linking Denver with Mexico City. The railroad was pushed on to Antonito by 1880 and ultimately to Santa Fe, New Mexico and Silverton, Colorado. The D&RG built west from Alamosa, completing the line to South Fork and its terminus at Creede in 1881. The line was later sold buy sucessor UP to the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad. The highest point on the SLRG at La Veta Pass, is 9,242 feet above sea level, the highest rail freight line in North America. The primary commodities hauled by the SLRG are grain, minerals, specialty rock products and produce. SLRG also handles substantial bridge traffic to and from the San Luis Central Railroad.

July 7, 1908
Train service to the west of Lewiston, Idaho, along the Snake River towards Pasco, Washington began with the completion of the Oregon-Washington and Idaho Railroad Company's from Riparia, Washington to Lewiston line. The line later became the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company and ultimately the Union Pacific Railroad Company. This was the second line into Lewiston, as the first train arrived at Lewiston on September 15, 1898. This train traveled over the newly completed Northern Pacific Railway Company's line from Moscow, Idaho to Lewiston, via Kendrick. In 1907, Northern Pacific Railway expanded 62.7 miles under the name of Clearwater Short Line Railway Company which pushed east from Arrow to Stites, Idaho, following the Clearwater River the entire distance. At this time, crews were already two years into the difficult task of construction 66 additional miles of track between Joseph (now Spalding) and Grangeville. To complete the heavy tunnel construction required on this line, large numbers of Chinese and Irish immigrants were brought in. This segment of construction represents an incredible engineering feat as well as an awesome human accomplishment.

CN 6026 leads a westbound freight at Morris, BC, along the Thompson River in September of 2004. Three SD40's rebuilt or not were unusual to see even in 2004 on the Canadian National. CN 6026 was a rebuilt SD40Q that was destroyed a year later in an accident,
GCFX an Alstom Canada SD40-3 was originally CN 5206 and CN 5213 is the third unit.
This arid section of the Thompson River is very popular with the whitewater rafting enthusiasts.
