Charlie,

Great picture of the U.P. Engineering Inspection Special. Late in commenting but I wanted to add some info on this train. I photographed it at Edelstein, IL. on the old AT&SF Transcon. It was 8 A.M. on July 8, 2010. Train left Joliet, IL. (M.P. 37) at 6 A.M. and passed Edelstein, IL. (M.P. 138) at 8 A.M. So, 50 M.P.H. average. The route for U.P. 2010 ENGINEERING INSPECTION SPECIAL TRIP #3 was:
LEG #1: N. COUNCIL BLUFFS - JOLIET (July 7, 2010)
LEG #2: JOLIET - PRATT, KS. (July 8, 2010)
LEG #3: PRATT - EL PASO (July 9, 2010)
LEG #4: EL PASO - YUMA (July 10, 2010)
LEG #5: YUMA - LAS VEGAS via L.A. (July 11, 2010)
LEG #6: LAS VEGAS - OGDEN (July 12, 2010)
LEG #7: OGDEN - CHEYENNE via Denver (July 13, 2010)
LEG #8: CHEYENNE - N. COUNCIL BLUFFS (July 14, 2010)
That is a lot of miles in eight days. Oh, my photos are slides. Only a few rolls left then decision time.
