This day in Railroad History
July 14, 1916
The Harahan Bridge over the Missisippi River at Memphis, Tennessee is opened. The bridge is named in honor of Mr. J. T. Harahan, prominent Memphis businessman and president of the bridge company. Originally called the Rock Island Bridge, it was renamed when Harahan was killed 4 years before completion of the project, when his car was hit by an oncoming train. 23 workers died during bridge construction. From 1916-1949, cars drove across on 2 narrow wooden planked one lane roadways suspended along both sides of the main bridge structure. With only a thin railing separating the vehicles from the muddy river far below, those who were scared of heights simply didn't travel by car on this mile long "side car" bridge.

The northernmost point on BNSF's Chicago-Seattle main line is where we find a westbound work train rolling alongside the Kootenai River just west of Katka, Idaho, on the late afternoon of June 26, 2010.
