This day in Railroad History
July 15, 1869
Collis P. Huntington became president of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. The C&O had been formed just the previous year by the merger of the Virginia Central Railroad and the Covington & Ohio Railroad. Collis Huntington was one of the "Big Four" responsible for the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in the western US, which had joined up with the Union Pacific Railroad at Promontory, Utah just 2 months before Huntingdon assumed the C&O presidency. The C&O continued growth to both the east and west, and reached the port at Newport News in 1882. Coal export became the staple traffic of the C&O. Collis P. Huntington by 1888 had control of several railroads linking coast to coast, but lost control of the C&O to the Vanderbilts in receivership in 1889.

Tonight's Photo - Please send photos to trainnews1@yahoo.com.

The Soo Line purchased the Milwaukee Road in 1985. This photo was taken not long after just east of the Cutoff in Milwaukee,WI. We're stopped and it appears the head brakeman is back checking out the third head car as I jump off to get a quick pic.
