This day in Railroad History
July 16, 1948
The Southern Railway ran its last passenger train on the Murphy Branch, in western North Carolina. Until 1980, the branch connected with the L&N’s line to Blue Ridge, Georgia. Various short lines connected with the Murphy branch, incuding the celebrated Graham County Railroad, which operated Shays until 1970. By 1985, Norfolk Southern traffic was gone on the Andrews to Murphy leg. and the State of North Carolina purchased the Dillsboro to Murphy tracks to keep them from being destroyed. Remarkably, 3 years later service was restored when the Great Smoky Mountains Railway began running passenger excursions. In 2003 Graham County Shay #1925 was loaned from the North Carolina Transportation Museum to the GSMRR to pull passenger trains for a few days.
