Mural in Sacramento's Train Station

While in Sacramento on a layover from the Zephyr to the San Joaquin, I saw the mural in the train station of the "Big 4". It wasn't the first time I seen it, but it was the first time I was so curious about it.

Does anyone know the history behind the painting? Like when it was done, and how it was done. Did they use just one painter, or was a team of painters used? Thanks in advance!
