Saw a piece on TMC this AM from 1947 called the Friendship Train. Columist Drew Piercen came up with the idea filling a train with food running across country picking food along the way and sending it to Euorpe to help in the after effects of world war two.

Train left LA on UP with 8 carsand FM diesls. PUs were made along way and arrival in Omaha had 57cars. Movie showed head end were passenger cars amd PUs were made behind them. Train left Omaha behind H-class CNW Northern traveled thru Clinton,IA to Chicago arriving with 80cars. Leaving Chi-town on Pennsy behind two Centipedes with over 100 cars to Philly. In Philly train was shown meeting the original American Freedom Train behind the PAs. Power was changed to GG1s at Philly.

Upon arrival at NYC some of the cars were floated on two car floats (barge) for the media in the river. All cars were emptied into four ships and the food was sent to England Italy and some other countries.

It appears this half hour movie was pieced together from news reel clips from around the country. Has there been anything published regarding this movement across America as it must havebeen THE most famous mixed train ever operated!
