All of these Buck Rogers-style proposals for high speed rail to Vegas can be summed up in eight words:
"I will believe it when I see it."
One can conduct studies, create websites and make press releases until the cows come home. Talk is cheap and doing the aforementioned requires little cash outlay. Until a shovel-full of dirt is turned toward the construction of such a project, I fear devoting any further attention to any of this is just a massive waste of time. We may as well talk about the proposed bridge that's going to be built between Alaska and Siberia.
Also, I doubt that anything will ever be constructed south / west of Victorville, where the real estate acquisition costs and NIMBY opposition both start to escalate. NIMBYs seem to be calling all the shots toward just about everything in this day and age. Cooperation from UP, BNSF and SCAX to use existing right-of-way in some form is a real long shot. Don't count on it. Government at all levels is too cash-strapped to fund such a project. We're too busy trying to make interest payments to China for money we owe them. Let's not forget money that will have to be earmarked for Obamacare and entitlements to illegal aliens.
If one were to have to drive to Victorville to catch a train to Vegas, he may as well just keep on drivin' to Vegas.
