Straight shot east from the east portal, no sidehill, not that much to see.

The switchback route can be found on both sides, but the old hwy cuts it up on the west. On the east side the PCT is on it north from the summit and the hwy cuts it twice below that.

Best switchback route to see is the NP on Stampede Pass, built with 32 trestles. Route is still complete except for the trestles if you don't mind brush crashing vine maple. Saw a link in great condition on the ground under trestle 19, highest one on the line. This is on the wetter side of a pass abandoned in 1888, a surprising find.
