Everyone's responded with all the reasons that some "saves" are futile. But this message board and others are the perfect place to start lists of "things that ought to ba saved" and then ordinate them. I'm not enough of a long-time fan to nominate anything but I think the rest of you are. I have been in the management of many not-for-profit efforts and the ones that succeed have clearly defined parameters that are well communicated to the donor community.

We should first discuss a list of criteria (historicity, access, condition, cost to recover, etc.) and then put out an ordinal list of what we'd like to see done. Only when we've done that can we match volunteer workers with donors, the essential first step. Sadly, not everything can or ought to be saved.
