Rubber failed because of old age in the vibration isolators between the trolley boards and a sub assembly holding the trolley pole; it would not reach the trolley wire. After that was repaired a 71 year old resistor in the motor-generator voltage regulator circuit failed. Replacement resistors have been obtained and the voltage regulator circuit board is being rebuilt. Cloth insulation on the circuit board wiring literally was falling off so those wires also are being replaced. With luck Muni #1003 should be back in service soon.
Future plans for #1003 include replacing the existing narrow wheel tires with compromise tread tires to allow operation on the old Sacramento Northern main line. Tires from scrapped Shaker Heights PCC cars have been purchased and should arrive within the next few months.
Muni #1016 now has the wider tread tires and operates on the former SN track.
