I, too, first heard the term "crud" in the early 70s and always assumed that it referred to railfan unhappiness concerning the demise of the cool old junk the SW1500s replaced. The gang of thugs I ran around with in those days expanded the reference to include EMD's related models:
SW1000--Mini-Crud
SW1001--Crudlet
SW1500--Crud (of course)
SW1504--Mexi-Crud
MP15DC--Super Crud
MP15AC--Crud GT
MP15T-- Turbo Crud (came later, but a logical progression)

More recently, I've heard GP15-1s referred to as "Spuds."
