UP stack train power

Several times, I have seen UP take one unit off of the head end of an eastbound stack train in Salt Lake. Why do they do this?

East of Salt Lake, they face Weber and Echo Canyons. Unless they change power in Green River, they face the Continental Divide at Tipton. If they don't change power at Rawlins or Laramie, they also face Sherman Hill. Are these grades worse than what they face from Las Vegas to Salt Lake (Apex, Crestline, and friends)?

Or was that extra unit there from LA or Yermo, to help out on Cima Hill, and they didn't take it off until Salt Lake?
