Only the 12 GP9s and the one SD7 that had dual controls were painted like this, with the scarlet feather on both hoods. Other dual control units weren't, with the possible exception of the three RSD-5s that had dual controls. At least one of those units was repainted scarlet & gray, and it didn't appear to have a feather on the short hood, but black & white film of that period (1959-1960) often "hid" the scarlet color.

When the GP9s were rebuilt during the mid-1970s and renumbered 3186 - 3196 and 3352, the second control stand was removed, so the feather then was only applied to the short hood. The SD7 was repainted without the rear feather sometime in the early Seventies, but it kept its dual controls (although the second control stand wasn't used) until it, too, was rebuilt.
