NIMBYitis is in full force to prevent construction of vitally needed increased capacity on the LIRR Main Line. What the locals do not want to accept is that suburban sprawl is now reaching the eastern portions of Suffolk County and most trains serving these areas funnel through the Nassau County Main Line. This makes the additional trackage imperative to avoid commuter gridlock.

Up through WWII, the Central Extension ran from Garden City eastward to connect with the Main Line at Bethpage. Due to lack of foresight this portion was abandoned in the 1950s. Had that been preserved, the Third Track Plan would not be needed today.
