Former LNER #4472, "The Flying Scotsman" arerived in the Bay Area in the fall of 1971 and was taken to San Francisco on the WP car ferry "Las Plumas". In the spring of the following year, Pegler started running excursions along the State Belt Railroad from the yard which is now the Pier 39 parking garage down just past the Ferry Building running underneath the beloved Embarcadero Freeway.
The operation only lasted a short time as Pegler ran out of money and the Telegraph Hill NIMBY's complaints took hold.
In this photo, Pegler can be seen in the engineer's seat and riding the tender is State Belt Railroad manager Joseph Silva. The men on the pilot were State Belt Crewmen with were required by the union on the Belt.
