Well, its not obvious to me that that spur was abandoned at the time of Drew's photo. While it may not run alongside a building with a loading dock/door, any number of commodities can be unloaded from the pavement with a forklift. Until just a few years ago, Ballard Terminal Railroad (Seattle) handled reefers that their customer loaded frozen fish into for shipment, out in the middle of the street. Lumber and wallboard are often unloaded in a parking lot.
