It really depends how deep the fords are at the Afton campground and at the second bridge near the old tunnel. One could easily take a 2WD sedan in from the Basin Rd exit, though its wise to stick to the maintenance road along the ROW. If you go off into the riverbed, 4WD is good to have for some of the deep, sandy areas.
