Actually, the heritage equipment isn't seeing much action in
Charlotte these days, due to compatibility problems with
the very busy light rail operation. In addition to the historic
car, there are also two "replica" trolley cars purchased new
in recent years. These have been equipped with pantographs to
be able to operate under the catenary of the light rail system.
Plans are underway for a streetcar operation in downtown
Charlotte. On a recent visit to Charlotte, I was happy to
see that when Charlotte rebuilt a major street, it went
ahead and put in streetcar tracks -- though it is rather
strange to see a couple of miles of isolated new streetcar
trackage that isn't connected to anything.
