George, a branch was built from Corbin Junction on the Spokane International (now UP, just south of Silverwood theme park) in a northeastward direction to Bayview during 1910-11. Among other things, this branch tapped lime traffic that had previously been barged in barrels north across Lake Pend Oreille to an NP dock at Hope and GN dock at Sandpoint. About the time this branch was completed, a new cement business was opened near Lakeview, just across the bay from Bayview. Railcar barges would be floated directly under the cement chutes and up to six cars at a time would be loaded, then floated back to Bayview to head toward Spokane on the SI.

Construction of Farragut Naval Training Center during WWII prompted NP to build a branch from Athol directly east into the base. The junction with the NP main was about a quarter mile north of where Hwy 54 currently crosses the BNSF main.

Both branches are still clearly shown in the 7.5-minute USGS topos.

By the way, good catches on the Trains map. I haven't seen the issue yet.
