SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – A 32-year-old man jumped from a bridge into the path of an oncoming train and was run over before the conductor was able to stop, authorities said.
He survived.
The conductor of the Metrolink train saw the man jump from the Stonehill Drive bridge onto the tracks Saturday just before 10 p.m., said Lt. John Meyer of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The conductor tried to stop the train as he saw the man jump.
The jumper, whom sheriff's officials declined to identify, landed between the rails and cars passed over him, Meyer said.
"Several cars passed over him before the train was able to stop," Meyer said. "It didn't crush him."
Paramedics found the man underneath the train when they arrived, breathing.
He was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Meyer said, where he was treated for injuries to his arms and legs.
He is expected to survive.
The case is being investigated as a suicide attempt, Meyer said.
