Chard Walker

Yesterday (Friday) I went to Ontario Airport to pick up Chard when he returned from visiting his daughters and their families in Montana. When I located Chard, I found that he was very sick, weak, unable to walk without assistance, and not as mentally sharp as he usually is. Making a long story short, I got him home, contacted his neighbor Allan (who watches Chard's house when he is gone), and in turn we contacted one of Chard's daughters. Allan and I ended up taking Chard to the emergency room at the local hospital where they found that he had a 103 degree temperature. A chest X-ray showed that he has pneumonia. Needless to say, he was admitted to the hospital. As a result of some of the immediate treatment they gave him, he improved significantly even before we left the hospital for the night.

Today (Saturday) we returned to the hospital to visit him. While he is obviously still sick, he looked good, spoke well, and got his sharp mind back. He had some heavy coughing and was shaky. He will probably be in the hospital at least 5 days. We have had several phone calls with his daughters and they are staying in close contact with us and the hospital. He is in a special unit which is one step down from an intensive care unit but where he is under the close and constant care of a nurse. He is allowed visitors for short periods of time and is allowed phone calls. Everyone at the hospital who we have had contact with has been great, and I can say with certainty that Chard is in good hands. Given enough time to fully recover his strength, Chard should fine.

Chard said that this trip was very exhausting as he was busy with his family members every day. Also, he inhaled a lot of smoke from the several wildfires that have been burning over the past few days in Montana.

The hospital information is:

Desert Valley Hospital
16850 Bear Valley Road
Victorville, CA 92395
Room 244-3
(760) 241-8000

I recommend against sending flowers at this time due to the room he is in.

Charlie Schultz
