NWP action at the Surface Transportation Board

Yesterday the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company (NWPCO) filed a verified notice of exemption for a change of operators from Northwestern Pacific Railway Company LLC to them. The notice would terminate John Darling's NWPY common carrier obligations, with the new company taking over the operating lease on tracks owned by SMART and NCRA. At this point the exemption only covers the part of the railroad south of Milepost 142.5, the north end of the Willits Yard Limits about three miles north of town. There is a letter signed by John Darling stating his consent with the transfer to the new operator. NWPCO intends to consumate the transaction on or after 8 September 2007. The document is freely available to anyone with an internet connection and Adobe Acrobat at the STB website (http://www.stb.dot.gov) under Docket # Finance Document (FD) No. 35073.

One interesting note...the list of entities transferring the operating interest to NWPCO includes SMART, NCRA, and the NWPY...and the NWPY address given is a P.O. Box in Tomales, with Attention to Brian Whipple. I didn't know he was still involved in NWPY or anything else to do with the NWP...anyone know the story behind his connection to the present situation?
