Being a midwest boy I did not find the Tehachappi western slopes of the until late (1991). I found the Loop sooner because so much was written and so many pictures were published about it. Well, I wasn't yet an SP fan but the Santa Fe ran through nearby Chicago suburbs. And I was, of course, smitten by warbonnets starting with F-units at Joliet, IL in the 1960s.
On October 18, 1992 I found the those west slopes to my liking as these three picture of the same train at three different locations demonstrate. In the midwest trains run fast and in a straight line. Not so on these west slopes.
At Bealville.
Half way to Caliente.
A Beebe shot at Caliente. And I love it.
