BNSF To Begin Digital Radio Frequency Testing

Per a BNSF Division General Notice (California), effective 8/29/11, AAR channel 71 as used within the Barstow, CA, railyard will convert to the new VNB/Digital format as new AAR digital channel 435. The actual RF frequency remains the same (161.175 mHz), however. Anyone in the Barstow area or passing through might want to tune in so as to get an idea of what a digital radio transmission sounds like on an analog receiver so as to be able to identify when your favorite RR/divn also makes the change. Sometime in November of 2011, additional Barstow (and possibly other location) yard channels will also convert to the new format.
As an aside, there are three formats available right now: traditional "wide band" analog (15 kHz channel spacing), "narrow band" (12.5 kHz channel spacing - this what some of the UPRR service units are converting to right now), and the new "Very Narrow Band" (VNB)/digital (7.5 kHz channel spacing).
The new digital conversion will increase the number of channels available for railroad use (new digital channels are numbered from 302 through 488). The US railroad frequency band still remains from 160.215 mHz through 161.565 mHz so the new digital channels used will be from 307 through 487. Unknown as to any compatible scanners/receivers that might be available to the general public but more to follow on this, I'm sure.
