Fire department officials are investigating a chemical leak from a train derailment near Jefferson Chemical Road just east of Conroe today.
Between 8:40 a.m. and 9 a.m. a Santa Fe Railroad train slid off the tracks, causing two tanks and three boxcars to derail. There were no injuries, said state trooper Mike Franklin.
Officials believe one of the tanks is leaking sulfuric acid, a highly corrosive substance.
As a precaution, several businesses in the vicinity of the tracks were evacuated and Jefferson Chemical Road has been closed between FM 1485 and FM 3083.
Franklin said the train apparently was knocked off the tracks while crossing Jefferson Chemical Road. The pavement was torn up, leaving behind a trail of rocks and debris. The two tankers and three boxcars fell over on their sides after leaving the rails.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Fire departments from The Woodlands, Needham and Conroe responded to the call.
